Progression of Venus
Friday, 22 January 2010
I am working on my rendition of Venus. You may have caught the video I had posted earlier…I took it down because it was too long and boring (and there was even more to come!). I have been recording the process but I think I will wait and condense it quite a bit before I post it.
I’ll tell you one thing…you can learn a lot about painting by recording yourself and watching!
I have very limited experience with figure drawing or painting. As you know, my concentration has mainly been a woman’s face. Then, I tried hands a few times. Now I am going to do more complete bodies. I have been needing to be artisticly s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d and there is no way I am going to get good at it without practicing so…practice, I will.

Yeah, but even your practice looks like perfection to me!
And what more fitting subject matter than Venus these weeks before Valentine’s Day!

Thanks Pearle. =) I just took another look at it after walking away for awhile and I see the face is kinda big. It is so difficult to get realistic proportions!! I know that I could have been a bit more mathematically calculated from the start and saved myself some frustration later down the road…maybe next time.

Jane, I think her head looks perfectly fine in proportion to her body! In fact, proportion-wise, this is what I look like at 5’4″, I’d say. I have very narrow shoulders (almost impossible to hold a purse).
I think she’s beautiful! You are so talented, I’m constantly in awe of you.

I’ve found that when I paint faces, I consistently make one side of the face larger than the other and I can’t see it unless I hold the painting up to a mirror or take a photo of it. Weird.

practice makes perfect… looking good I think.

If the head were bigger I think it would be too big….I go to the gym to swim and trust me this is a pretty average looking naked womans body. Even the most fit women don’t look Playboy ready when they are naked. I think this is amazing and you should give yourself a big two thumbs up.

Most recently I’ve discovered that taking a photo and then looking at the image in the preview screen is a tremendous tool.
Oh! And I had a dream about you ! You and I were in my studio and we agreed that we’d exchange art. I could have one of your paintings and you selected one of my husband’s hall tables that I paint.

very nice, Jane! I love watching the work in progress, and I love that you are challenging yourself!

Gritty! I loved how the hair was black then you painted blond over it. Your art has a rennaisance look to it. Michaelangelo would be proud! Jodie Jensen
